Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong invited former staffers from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency formed to reduce federal spending and government programs, to join his company.

On Tuesday afternoon, Armstrong threw his support behind former staffers from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency formed under President Donald Trump's second administration.

The statement comes roughly two weeks after Elon Musk sought to distance himself from DOGE amid protests against the agency's work rolling through the capital.

“It is funny that we've got DOGE,” Musk said during a Cabinet meeting held at the White House on April 30.

“Doesn't the absurdity of that seem, like, like, are we in a simulation here or what's going on? But, like, it was a meme coin at one point. Like, how did we get here?”

At the start of the year, Trump signed an executive order on January 20 officially renaming the United States Digital Service as the United States DOGE Service (USDS) and putting it in charge of rolling out new government programs and cutting federal spending by $2 trillion to eliminate unnecessary agencies and programs. To date, DOGE claims to have saved $170 billion, though news organizations have called into question “discrepancies” in its reporting and only $70.9 billion of its reported savings are itemized as of its most recent update on May 11.

To that end, the agency has faced scrutiny early on for its handling of cybersecurity, with one report detailing how a hacker gained access to Elon Musk's X account and threatened to shut down the Treasury unless his demands were met.

Staffed mostly by young tech-savvy operatives like Harvard dropout Ethan Shaotran, who lost friends and social standing as a result of his employment at the agency, and work until 2am every day of the week without weekends, according to Shaotran, the value and impact of their work at DOGE is "so much more vast than anything you could learn in a classroom doing computer science."
