Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and tech magnate, appeared at a town hall event in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on March 30, 2025, where he clarified the potential role of Dogecoin in the U.S. government.

Musk's new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been the subject of much speculation, especially regarding the possibility of the government adopting Dogecoin, an cryptocurrency, for payment or accounting. However, during the discussion, which was focused on the administration's efforts to streamline federal operations and reduce spending, Musk stated that the two had been misconstrued.

"The names are similar, but they’re doing two very different things," Musk said in response to a question about whether DOGE would utilize the Dogecoin blockchain for transparency and efficiency. "As far as I know, there are no plans for the government to use Dogecoin or anything like that. They happen to be similar names, but really, we’re just literally trying to make the government 15% more efficient."

This statement puts an end to rumors that the U.S. government, under Musk's advisory leadership, was considering integrating Dogecoin into its functions.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) through executive order to modernize federal operations, cut spending, and reduce bureaucracy. To spearhead this initiative, Trump appointed Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as a senior advisor, leveraging his technological innovation and cost-cutting experience at his companies.

Since its inception, DOGE has implemented several changes, including large-scale layoffs across federal agencies and the elimination of programs related to climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). These cuts, according to Musk, were necessary steps toward making the government more efficient.
