Solana and Litecoin Lead the Charge for Spot Crypto ETF Approval

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts predict a 90% chance of SEC approval for Solana and Litecoin spot crypto ETFs in 2025. This forecast, from experts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart, suggests a shift in the SEC's stance towards altcoin-based investment products beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Balchunas, in a post on X, expressed optimism about the approval, referencing SEC Commissioner Atkins' pronouncements on crypto regulation. He included a chart detailing Bloomberg Intelligence's probability assessments for numerous pending ETF applications.

The chart shows that Solana and Litecoin are not alone. Several digital assets, backed by major financial firms including Grayscale, VanEck, 21Shares, Bitwise, Franklin Templeton, CoinShares, Hashdex, and WisdomTree, are under consideration. However, Solana and Litecoin currently garner the most bullish projections. Both received official SEC acknowledgment earlier this year, with projected deadlines in October 2025 (October 10 for Solana and October 2 for Litecoin).

Several factors contribute to this optimism. The SEC and CFTC are increasingly classifying these assets as commodities, not securities, overcoming a significant regulatory hurdle. The existence of established futures markets for both assets also strengthens their case for ETF approval.

This surge in optimism reflects a broader trend. Firms like Grayscale, Bitwise, and Franklin Templeton have submitted numerous applications, encompassing XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano, Polkadot, Hedera (HBAR), and Avalanche. Bloomberg Intelligence estimates an 85% chance of approval for XRP, 80% for Dogecoin and HBAR, and approximately 75% for Cardano, Polkadot, and Avalanche.

Most SEC final deadlines fall in Q4 2025, though Bloomberg analysts note these dates are flexible, and decisions could arrive sooner depending on political or market pressures.

While the altcoin focus is prominent, the regulatory process remains deliberate. Seyffart noted recent SEC delays on Ethereum staking and Dogecoin spot ETFs, anticipating similar delays for Solana and HBAR filings. He emphasized that these delays are part of the standard procedure.

The increasing institutional interest in crypto is undeniable and rapidly evolving, extending beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. This wave of ETF applications puts pressure on the SEC to establish clearer regulations for a wider range of digital assets. If the analysts' predictions hold true, 2025 could mark altcoins' mainstream arrival on Wall Street.
