Why has Zimbabwe failed to end oppression after 1980 nor for 46 years and counting since?

The real tragedy for Africa is the men and women behind this reign of terror were yesterday’s liberation heroes and heroines and they, in turn had been subjected to the same brutal oppression under white colonial rule. Before independence Zanu PF leaders preached freedom, liberty, One mam, one vote, etc. All these values were quickly discarded when the opportunity to become the next oppressors beckoned. The people of Zimbabwe have risked livelihoods, limbs and even their very lives to elect Chamisa and his MDC friends into power just as the generation before had risked all to support the struggle to end white colonial oppression. Chamisa & co.’s number one task was to implement the necessary democratic changes to end the Zanu PF dictatorship. MDC/CCC leaders have had many opportunities to implement the said reforms and end the dictatorship in the last 26 years including the 5 GNU years when they had the best chance. They have failed to implement even one token reform. Not one! Mugabe bribed them with the trappings of high office and the forgot about the reforms. And ever since the GNU debacle, they have participated in flawed elections knowing fully well that Zanu PF was rigging the elections and that participating would give the regime legitimacy and perpetuate the nation’s suffering. They also knew that Zanu PF gives away a few gravy train seats to entice the opposition to participate no matter how flawed and illegal the process got. “Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!” (MDC leaders have learned to enjoy the trappings of high office, they will not rock the boat!) boasted Zanu PF cronies when they were asked why MDC leaders were not implementing the reforms during the GNU. History was just repeating itself; the MDC leaders forgot about the reforms just as readily as the Zanu PF cronies themselves had forgotten their promise of one man, one vote; etc. when the chance to be the next oppressors had beckoned. Chamisa’s supporters are proud to circulate the video of what Chamisa said from his hospital bed in 2007. They cannot bear to hear the video of Chamisa lying about CCC winning 2023 elections, he even evokes the name of God, to con the nation to participate in the flawed elections. Zanu PF supporters never tire of praising Mnangagwa’s heroic exploits during the war of independence but have filtered out his role in the 2008 Operation Mavhotera Papi. Both Zanu PF and MDC/CCC leaders have exploited with self imposed memory blackout on the part of their supporters to portray themselves as demigods who can do no wrong! A healthy and functioning democracy demands that the people hold the leaders to account. In Zimbabwe that is completely out of the question, once you have elevated the leader to an infallible demigod, a mere mortal cannot hold a demigod to account. And account for what if the demigod is infallible! Mnangagwa did not rig the elections nor did Chamisa lie that he had plugged the vote rigging loop holes to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections.
