📖 Published in 1857, Madame Bovary is the novel that consecrated Gustave Flaubert as one of the masters of European Realism. Initially accused of "outraging morals" and then acquitted, the book soon became a publishing success and today is considered an absolute masterpiece of nineteenth-century fiction. At the center of the story is Emma Bovary, a young woman who grew up among romantic readings and dreams of extraordinary passions. By marrying Charles Bovary, an honest but ordinary provincial doctor, Emma hopes to find an intense and fulfilling life. However, daily reality turns out to be very different from his expectations: monotony, boredom and dissatisfaction slowly take over. In an attempt to escape the mediocrity that surrounds her, Emma takes refuge in illusions, extramarital affairs and a lifestyle beyond her means. His story thus becomes a powerful criticism of the bourgeois society of the time and a universal reflection on the conflict between desire and reality, between romantic dream and concreteness of existence. Flaubert achieves extraordinary stylistic perfection in this work: the obsessive search for the "right word" (le mot juste) and the masterful use of free indirect discourse give the novel an innovative psychological depth, making Emma a tragic and very modern figure, a symbol of human passions and illusions.
