In an attempt to escape the mediocrity that surrounds her, Emma takes refuge in illusions, extramarital affairs and a lifestyle beyond her means. His story thus becomes a powerful criticism of the bourgeois society of the time and a universal reflection on the conflict between desire and reality, between romantic dream and concreteness of existence. Flaubert achieves extraordinary stylistic perfection in this work: the obsessive search for the "right word" (le mot juste) and the masterful use of free indirect discourse give the novel an innovative psychological depth, making Emma a tragic and very modern figure, a symbol of human passions and illusions.
