The World Food Programme USA (WFP USA) announced it will now accept donations of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, and over 80 other digital assets. This initiative aims to address critical funding gaps and combat global hunger.
US World Food Program Accepts Bitcoin, Dogecoin Donations Amid Funding Crisis
The organization seeks to raise $25 million through its Emergency Hunger Relief Fund to provide food aid to the 58 million people facing hunger worldwide. While operating independently of the UN's World Food Programme, WFP USA shares its mission to alleviate food insecurity in vulnerable regions.
This move to accept crypto donations follows significant funding cuts during the Trump administration. These cuts halted U.S. financial support for emergency food aid in 14 countries, including Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen. WFP officials warned these cuts could have devastating consequences, potentially resulting in death for millions facing starvation.
A Modern Approach to Humanitarian Aid
Dorota Amin, WFP USA’s director of philanthropy and partnerships, explained that embracing emerging technologies like blockchain and crypto is driven by necessity, not just innovation. She stated, “Traditional aid systems are under great pressure. Embracing new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency is not just a choice, it is a necessity.”
Crypto donations offer advantages beyond speed and efficiency. WFP USA highlighted that blockchain-based payments have lower transaction fees, ensuring a larger portion of each donation directly supports relief efforts.
Separately, Reuters reported that the White House confirmed plans to provide some funding to the UN World Food Programme. However, US officials indicated that the organization must implement changes in certain countries before receiving full funding restoration.
