Ching Shih commanded 80,000 pirates and 1,800 warships on the South China Sea. She crushed the Chinese navy, humiliated the Portuguese, and forced the British to negotiate. She started life as a prostitute on a floating brothel in Canton. Her name was Ching Shih — and she was not merely the most powerful pirate who ever lived. She was the only one who truly won. Born into the lowest caste of Chinese society, she negotiated 50% ownership of a pirate empire before setting foot on a ship. When her husband drowned, she seized control of the entire confederation and wrote a legal code so brutal that her fleet operated with more discipline than most standing navies. Disobey an order — beheaded. Steal from the treasury — executed. She defeated the Qing Dynasty navy, fought off the Portuguese, and forced the British East India Company to the negotiating table. Then she pulled off the greatest exit in criminal history: full pardons for all 80,000 pirates, she kept every coin of the treasure, received a personal fleet, and retired to run a gambling house in Canton.
