Fresh ground is one of my favorite things. This video follows the expansion of my neighbor's garden to the south—we've stripped sod around the corner and connected a new planting area that now links the two sides of the block. I walk you through the existing structure (a Hollywood juniper, Arctostaphylos × 'Austin Griffiths', a pair of Yucca rostrata, and a Chamaecyparis at the corner), talk through the working plan for what goes in next—including a Thuja orientalis 'Morgan' echo and a new Arctostaphylos to repeat the manzanita theme in a wider, lower form—and then tackle what I think is the most important decision: the corner plant. That corner plant is a Picea pungens 'Procumbens' I've had in my own garden in a spot that was never quite right for it. I transplant it here, walk you through why this is a better home, and show a few other divisions and movers that are already in the ground—Caryopteris, Amsonia hubrichtii, a grass, a little salvia. Everything in the ground so far came from my garden or as divisions—good for cohesion, good for the budget. This garden has its own playlist if you want to follow along from the start: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLuvh7g5Kh63N9ts5tK4TFZ0acxd46Gf- 🌿 eGardenGo plant combinations and profiles: https://www.egardengo.com Table of Contents: 0:00 Bare ground and what's new 0:34 The existing structure: Hollywood juniper, manzanita, yucca, chamaecyparis 1:18 Arctostaphylos × 'Austin Griffiths'—and how I want to repeat it 1:49 The overarching concept: quieter garden as you round the corner 2:11 Planning a manzanita echo on the front slope 3:09 Thuja orientalis 'Morgan' as a structural link between both sides 3:49 The corner question—and the plant I have in mind 4:28 See the Picea pungens 'Procumbens' in Renee's Foliage-First Garden: https://youtu.be/lGCyBiU6tcg 5:09 Deciding to transplant it (and why today is a good day to try) 6:20 It came out beautifully—and now this corner is going to be great 6:51 Planting in: soaking the root ball, moistening the hole (learn more about this here: https://youtu.be/1Y9ZDv9DWKg) 7:49 Other movers: Caryopteris, Amsonia, grass, salvia 9:22 Divisions and continuity between the two garden spaces
