The 1851 United States One Cent Coin (known in English as the 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent) is a highly coveted historical piece by collectors, made of pure copper and with a diameter of 27.5 mm, making it noticeably larger than a modern quarter. All of this year's pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, so they do not have a mintmark. Design: Liberty with braided hair and a headband that says "LIBERTY" on the obverse, and the denomination "ONE CENT" within a wreath of leaves on the reverse. Designer: Christian Gobrecht. Weight: 10.89 grams. Total mintage: 9,889,707 coins. Estimated value in the numismatic marketThe market value of this coin depends on its state of preservation (grade) and whether it is a common or rare variant. According to price guides from entities such as NGC Coin Explorer and current auction markets, reference prices are distributed as follows Low or worn grades (Good G-4 to Fine F-12): They are valued at approximately $16 USD to $35 USD. They are common pieces that show a lot of wear but keep the dates and main letters legible. Medium grades (Very Fine VF-20 to Extremely Fine XF-40): Their value ranges between $75 USD and $100 USD. They retain sharp detail in the Liberty braids and back crown leaves. High or Uncirculated Grades (Mint State MS-60 to MS-65): Valued from $210 USD to $1,025 USD. They are coins that retain their original copper shine and lack wear and tear from use. Exceptional quality grades (MS-66 or higher): Select specimens evaluated by certifiers can exceed $1,730 USD. An extreme example is a piece certified as MS67BN in the Arnold Jewelers catalog that is listed at around $6,500 USD due to its perfection and extreme rarity. Special variety: The 1851/81 errorThere is a very famous variant in which the engraver accidentally stamped the last two digits backwards and then corrected the die on top (variety 1851 over inverted 81). Examples that clearly show this minting error are rare and fetch significantly higher prices at auction, especially in higher grades.
