Acorn began in 1978 in Cambridge, England. Two men, Chris Curry and Hermann Hauser, founded the company. They wanted to build simple but powerful computers that many people could use. Their first known device was the Acorn Atom, a small home computer. Acorn became really famous in 1981 with the BBC Micro. This computer was used in many schools in Great Britain. As a result, entire generations of students learned programming. In the 1980s, Acorn worked on a new, very fast processor. This resulted in the ARM chip. Today, ARM technology is found in almost all smartphones and tablets. This is probably Acorn's most important legacy. Acorn later released the Archimedes, one of the first computers with an ARM processor. Technically it was ahead of its time, but it didn't sell as well as hoped. In the 1990s, it became more difficult for Acorn to compete with large companies like Apple and Microsoft. In 1998, Acorn was finally split up. The company disappeared, but ARM remained and became one of the most important technology companies in the world. Although Acorn no longer exists, its idea lives on: fast, efficient computers for everyone. ------------------------------------------------------ Yesterchips Home Computer and Games Console Museum Erbacher Straße 1 64750 Lützelbach/Haingrund https://yesterchips.de | yesterchips@web.de https://de-de.facebook.com/YesterchipsMuseum/ Tel. +49 1515 0859053 (WhatsApp, Signal) yesterchips@web.de Support the project!
