Before Haussmann's grand boulevards, Paris was a maze of medieval streets, half-timbered houses, dead ends and neighborhoods that have now disappeared. Without Charles Marville (1813-1879), we would probably never have been able to see this submerged Paris again. Commissioned in 1865 by the Historical Works Department of the Prefecture of the Seine, Marville traveled the streets slated for demolition in order to preserve their memory. His Album du Vieux Paris today constitutes an exceptional testimony to the capital before the great Haussmann works.
