Peptides: Episode 2: The Hype, the Fakes, and the Fine Print Welcome back to Peptides, Decoded. Last time we covered what a peptide actually is. Today, we're covering why the word has become such a magnet for misinformation, and what to watch for before you buy anything with “peptide” on the label. Here's the core problem: “peptide” sells. It shows up on labels, in ads, all over social media, and it's become a stand-in for credibility, whether or not that credibility is actually earned. So let's break down what to watch for. First, not all peptides are created equal. There isn't just one peptide. There are thousands of possible sequences, and scientists generally group them into a few categories: ones that signal your skin to build more collagen, ones that carry helpful minerals like copper into the skin, ones that relax the look of expression lines, and ones that slow the breakdown of collagen you already have. A product can say “peptide” on the front and still be using something obscure, cheap, or barely studied. The specific name matters far more than the word itself. Second, concentration matters enormously. A well-studied peptide added at a tiny, token amount, just so it can appear on the ingredient list, will do close to nothing. This happens more often than people realize. Third, and this is important: topical peptide skincare is regulated as a cosmetic, which means no government agency checks the brand's effectiveness claims before the product hits the shelf. Separately, there's been a real crackdown on peptides sold online for injection or so-called “research use.” Those are unregulated, sometimes contaminated, and not the same category as a skincare serum at all. If you ever see a peptide being sold for injection or microneedling at home, that's not advanced skincare, that's a legal and safety red flag. Fourth, be skeptical of anything promising overnight transformation. Real peptide studies run eight to twelve weeks. If a video claims a peptide serum rebuilt someone's skin barrier in a week, that claim is built for shares, not for accuracy. And finally, the honest research picture is more modest than the marketing suggests. A recent analysis pooling nineteen clinical trials on peptides and skin aging found only a modest overall benefit from topical use, with a lot of the measurable improvement actually coming from oral collagen supplements rather than creams. That doesn't mean topical peptides don't work. It means the specific peptide you choose matters enormously. Next episode, we're naming names: the specific peptides that do have real, independent evidence behind them, and exactly how each one helps your skin. That's next time, on Peptides, Decoded.
