A bird that weighs less than an ounce is building something that can outlast a hundred human years — an apartment complex the size of a small car, home to hundreds of families at once. This is the sociable weaver, a sparrow-sized bird from the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Unlike almost every other songbird — which builds one small nest for one pair and one clutch of eggs — sociable weavers build a single massive structure that the entire colony shares, and keeps adding onto, generation after generation. These communal nests can grow to 20 feet wide, 10 feet tall, and weigh more than a ton — packed with up to 250 chambers and housing well over a hundred breeding pairs at once. Some nests have been continuously occupied and expanded for more than a century, built by birds whose great-great-grandchildren are the ones living in them today. And it's not just shelter — it's genuine climate control. Kalahari temperatures swing from below freezing at night to over 100°F by day, but inside the nest, chamber temperatures stay remarkably stable: cool central rooms for shade in the heat, and insulated inner chambers where birds huddle together at night, cutting their individual energy cost of staying warm by as much as half. Raising young here is a group project too. Chicks from earlier broods regularly stick around to help feed and care for their younger siblings — and unrelated birds sometimes pitch in as well. But that much biomass in one place draws attention. Snakes target the nest for eggs and chicks, so weavers line their entrance tunnels with sharp sticks to keep them out — and small pygmy falcons frequently move into the structure itself, sometimes as tolerated fellow tenants, sometimes as a direct threat to the chicks living just chambers away. No single sociable weaver built this nest. No single generation could have.
