How many dollars of stablecoins exist? Two popular trackers, and one of them with two different totals, gave me $291.7B, $306.3B and $312.9B on the same pull. I opened all three with a read-only script (public pages and public node reads only: no wallet, no keys, no transactions), rebuilt one total to the dollar, found a gap inside another tracker's own list, and asked the blockchain about the one coin where they split by billions. Nobody is accused of anything; this is definitions, arithmetic and clearly labeled hypotheses. What I found (my read, Sep 30 2026, pull 17:54 IST = 12:24 UTC): - Three totals: CoinGecko's Stablecoins category headline $291.7B; DefiLlama's dashboard chart $306.3B; DefiLlama's API added up over 340 USD-pegged coins $312.9B. Lowest to highest: $21.2B. The "more than 99% are dollar coins" line from a Cointelegraph story reproduces: 99.45% on DefiLlama's series, 99.05% for CoinGecko's USD category against its headline. - DefiLlama rebuilt: USD-pegged circulating $313.2B (cached page build), minus 54 coins flagged double counted ($6.6B), plus 74 non-USD coins at dollar market cap ($1.7B), then the page's own market cap field (-$2.0B) = $306.256B, equal to the dashboard chart to the dollar. The flag is DefiLlama's classification, not mine. - CoinGecko's own gap: its category lists 350 coins adding up to $308.0B, $16.4B above its headline. The members that are also on its fiat-backed list add up to $291.703B, within $29M of the headline. HYPOTHESIS, unconfirmed: the headline leaves out coins not tagged fiat-backed (USD1, USDD, U, USDF, BFUSD are the biggest). CoinGecko does not say how the headline is built. - Tether: the issuer's own transparency file shows $183.79B in total liabilities; DefiLlama $183.77B; CoinGecko $183.80B. All within 0.02%. I compared numbers; I did not audit anything. - USDS (Sky Dollar): CoinGecko $9.79B vs DefiLlama $6.70B. Public nodes (eth_call totalSupply, Ethereum block 26,090,273): Ethereum 6.6997B, Base 2.9M, Arbitrum 99.8M; with DefiLlama's other small chains $6.808B, about 1.6% from DefiLlama and 30% from CoinGecko. Why CoinGecko shows more is UNCONFIRMED: I read three chains plus what DefiLlama lists. - The word "record": DefiLlama dashboard high $315.9B on 2026-05-17, last point (a day in progress) $306.3B (-3.05%); API chart high $320.8B, last $311.2B (-3.01%). Same record day, different level, nearly the same drop. Arithmetic on a chart, not a forecast. Not confirmed (flagged in the video): how CoinGecko builds its headline; why CoinGecko shows more USDS than the chains I read; what DefiLlama's double-count flag covers beyond its own label; why its market cap for USDS sits below circulating supply; USDS on Solana, OP Mainnet and Unichain (taken from DefiLlama, not read); DAI's 4.2% difference between trackers (not chased); the AllUnity USDAU launch details (issuer's announcement as reported by Cointelegraph, not in my data). Free-tier rate limit: CoinGecko returned HTTP 429 on one list page in the saved pull; my script waited 30 s once, stopped, and that page came from an earlier same-day request (17:47 IST). Every figure moves between pulls; these are the readings at the times shown.
