Bitwise 的狗狗币 ETF 退出:对 ETF 准入和山寨币需求的现实检验

Well, folks, it looks like the party's over for the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW). Just shy of a year since its much-hyped launch, Bitwise is pulling the plug, delisting and liquidating BWOW by mid-October. This move, while perhaps not shocking to those closely watching the crypto ETF space, serves as a stark reminder that easier ETF access doesn't automatically translate to lasting investor love, especially when it comes to single-token altcoin funds.

The Short, Unsweet Life of BWOW

Bitwise announced BWOW's grand entrance on November 25, 2025, with trading kicking off the very next day. Fast forward to September 8, 2026, and the fund was sporting a rather meager $721,815 in assets, holding about 8.2 million DOGE. Its cumulative net asset value (NAV) return since inception? A frosty -45.37%. Ouch.

Trading volume tells a similar tale of woe. While BWOW managed a decent $3 million in daily volume during its launch week, it never recaptured that initial spark. Compare that to Bitwise’s own Hyperliquid ETF (BHYP), which has seen significantly higher interest, or even other altcoin ETFs like Solana and XRP products pulling in hundreds of millions, even billions, in cumulative inflows. It's clear Dogecoin ETFs, including BWOW, just couldn't drum up the sustained secondary-market interest needed to thrive.

What Went Wrong (or Right, Depending on Your View)?

Bitwise's official line for the closure is pretty vanilla: they're “optimizing [their] product range to meet evolving investor needs.” While vague, the numbers certainly back up the 'evolving needs' part. The fund simply didn't achieve meaningful scale. Its net assets dwindled from $1.15 million at the end of 2025 to a mere $473,547 by June 30, 2026, with zero share creations in the first half of 2026 and 20,000 shares redeemed. The writing, it seems, was on the wall.

This isn't to say memecoins can't work in an ETF wrapper, or that Dogecoin is dead in the water. Far from it. Dogecoin still boasts a large, passionate community. However, this situation underscores a crucial point: a strong community doesn't automatically translate into sustained brokerage demand for an ETF. Investors in the regulated market are looking for more than just meme appeal; they're looking for sustainable assets, liquidity, and consistent inflows.

The Broader Picture: ETF Access vs. Sustainable Demand

The SEC made it easier to launch spot crypto products by approving generic listing standards in September 2025. This move widened the field, but as BWOW's closure demonstrates, it didn't equalize demand across all altcoins. While products tied to Solana and XRP have flourished, capturing significant inflows, Dogecoin's foray into the ETF world through BWOW ultimately faltered.

This outcome suggests that while the path to ETF access for crypto assets is smoothing out, issuers will likely gravitate towards tokens that can demonstrate enduring appeal, robust ecosystems, and the ability to sustain assets and liquidity. It's a clear signal that even with easier entry, an ETF's survival hinges on earning and maintaining investor interest.

So, for all you BWOW holders, keep an eye on October 15 for the trading cutoff and October 22 for your cash distribution. As for the wider crypto market, this Bitwise Dogecoin ETF saga reminds us that while getting into the game is easier than ever, actually winning still requires a solid play.
